Newton Police
The Newton Police Department arrested Glenn White, 42, an unemployed resident of Newton, on Wednesday Jan. 23 at 12:18 p.m. with the assistance of the Andover Twp. Police Department after he was spotted at the Econo-Lodge Motel on Route 206 in Andover Township by a Newton detective who was there continuing the investigation into numerous commercial burglaries that had occurred in Newton since December 2007. After a foot pursuit that led officers into the wetland area behind the homes on Springdale Gardens Road in Andover and Fredon townships, White was removed from the swamp and taken into custody. The arrest was the culmination of weeks of investigation that connected several burglaries and a vehicle theft to White through physical evidence collected and witness interviews. The following businesses had been burglarized by White: On Dec. 16, 2007, Town & Country Deli, 46 Sparta Ave. The business received damage to the glass windows and had cash stolen from within. A canvass of the area revealed a second attempted burglary at the Woodside Avenue Laundromat, located at 7 Woodside Ave. On Dec. 17, 2007, U-Save Mini Mart, 65 Sparta Ave. The defendant broke a window to gain entry into the business and stole cash from the register. On Dec. 19, 2007, Woodside Avenue Laundromat again. The defendant gained entry through the rear industrial fan, causing it damage and stole cash from within the business. A canvass of the surrounding businesses revealed he attempted to gain entry into Hot Locks and Carquest, nearby businesses in the shopping plaza. Several burglar tools were also recovered from the scene including several bent screwdrivers and a 3-foot long pry bar. On Dec. 31, 2007, Tri-State Rentals, 105 Sparta Ave. The defendant forced entry into the business through the rear door and stole cash. Also on Dec. 31, 2007, Visions Salon, 102 Sparta Avenue. The defendant pried the rear door open and entered the business and stole approximately $2000 in cash, computer and stereo equipment. On Jan. 23, JC Grill and Steakhouse, 144 Spring St. He forced entry into a rear window and stole cash from within the business. A motor vehicle theft was also reported to the Newton police on Dec. 10, 2007 when victim, Denise Lassiter called the police department and reported her vehicle, a 2004 Chevrolet Impala valued at approximately $13,000 was stolen. On Dec. 11, 2007 the vehicle was observed in the parking lot across from White’s residence on Sparta Avenue. Investigation revealed that the last person seen driving the vehicle was Glenn White. In an attempt to interview White at his residence, White refused to come out of his bedroom, yelled to police that the keys for the vehicle were on the kitchen counter and then fled from the house through a side window. Police were unable to apprehend White at that time. Upon his arrest, White was taken to the Newton Police Department where he was processed and charged with the following offenses: six counts of burglary, a third degree crime; three counts of criminal attempt of burglary, a third degree crime; five counts of theft of movable property, a third degree crime; one count of fourth degree theft of movable property; one count of a disorderly persons offense of theft of movable property; two counts of fourth degree criminal mischief; six counts of disorderly persons offenses of criminal mischief; one count of the fourth degree crime of possession of burglar tools. Hon. Judge Edward Gannon was contacted and he authorized complaint warrants with bail set at $100,000, no 10 percent option. White was then incarcerated in the Sussex County Jail.
