June 9 At 5:14 p.m., on Spring Street, Newton Police Officer Kenneth Teets observed what appeared to be an open container of an alcoholic beverage in the hand of Jeremy Spencer, 20, of Newton. Upon closer inspection and investigation of Spencer and of Jean Fontus, 21, of Newton, police discovered Fontus to be in possession of marijuana. He was taken into custody as was Spencer, who became disorderly during the investigation. Fontus was charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and with providing an alcoholic beverage to persons under legal age. Spencer was charged with possession of an alcoholic beverage by a person under legal age and disorderly conduct. Both men were processed and released pending an appearance in Newton Municipal Court. June 10 At 9:20 a.m., police were summoned to investigate an incident of criminal mischief that occurred sometime after 7:30 p.m. the night prior. Unknown actors used a sharp instrument to slash the tires of a landscape trailer parked at TriState Rental on Sparta Avenue. Police are asking anyone with information relating to this incident, or who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area, to call them at 973-383-2525. At 9:43 p.m., Sgt. Michael Monaco stopped a conversion van on Spring Street after observing the van stopped in the street obstructing traffic for a period of a few minutes. The subsequent investigation resulted in the arrest of Henry Trojanowski, 44, of Pompton Plains, for possession of an open container of an alcohol beverage in a motor vehicle and suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Trojanowski was taken into custody, processed and charged with possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Paterson, to which he posted $80 bail and was released. He was not charged with driving while intoxicated. June 13 At 9:08 a.m., police were summoned to the construction site at the new Holiday Inn Express on North Park Drive to investigate the theft of a computer tower. Some time during the previous several days, unknown actor(s) removed a Dell computer tower designed for use with the building’s closed circuit television security system from the site. The computer is valued at $4,879. Police are asking anyone with information to contact police headquarters at 973-383-2525.
