    A 47-year-old Newton man was arrested twice for the same offense within 3 and 1/2 hours. At 4:10pm Sgt. Michael Monaco was on foot patrol on Spring Street when he was approached by a storeowner reporting an alleged theft of clothing from his store. Sgt. Monaco recognized that the description of the subject given to him matched that of someone known to him and his subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Patrick Williams, age 47, of 96 Main Street in Newton. The clothing items, 2 jackets and a hat were recovered and returned to the storeowner. Williams was charged with Shoplifting 2C:20-11, and released pending a municipal court appearance. At 7:40 p.m. police officers were summoned to the Rite Aid pharmacy to investigate an allegation that an unknown male subject had taken items from the store without paying. As foot patrol officer Roy Souther approached the store he observed Williams, who fit the description given by the store cashier, and detained him. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Williams, who resisted being taken into custody. He was brought under control and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with the offenses of; Shoplifting; 2C:20-11 Resisting Arrest; 2C:29-2b Williams was processed and lodged in the Sussex County jail in lieu of $9,000.00 bail set by the Hon. John E. Mulhern. Officer Souther was injured during the arrest and was treated at the Newton Memorial Hospital for a laceration to his thumb and released.
