Newton Police
July 14 Terry Zito, of Newton was stopped by police on Water Street at 9:34 p.m. where narcotics were found in his possession. Trooper Archer Jones and his dog, Nero, discovered crack cocaine in the car. Zito was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled and dangerous substance and admitted to the Sussex County Jail in bail default. Officers were drawn to Spring Street by the sound of a person screaming at 10:18 p.m. They discovered Robert Fountain, 37, of Newton who appeared to be angered and intoxicated. He was yelling and engaged in threatening behavior. Fountain refused to comply with officers orders to stop and calm down, according to the police report. He physically resisted officers attempts to take him to custody and place him in the police car. He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Fountain was served summons complaints and released pending a municipal court appearance. Ian Skinner, 42, of Newton, was observed by police officers walking on Spring Street drinking from a can in a brown bag at 7:24 p.m. Investigating officers found the can contained an alcoholic beverage. Skinner was issued a summons for possessing an open container of alcohol in public and released pending a municipal court appearance. Police detectives observed James Macarthur Alston, 36, of Perth Amboy, on Spring Street, at about 6 p.m. A warrant check revealed that he was wanted by the state parole department. Alston had removed an electronic monitoring bracelet and had absconded from parole supervision according to the warrant. Alston attempted to flee and then fought with the officers when taken under arrest. He struck an officer in the face with his fist and resisted arrest. Alston was charged resisting arrest and aggravated assault on a police officer. He was lodged in default of $10,000 bail. During Alston’s arrest, Eddie Archie, 45, of Newton, physically interfered with the officers. He was also arrested and charged with obstructing the administration of law. Archie was processed at Newton Police headquarters and released after being served with a summons complaint. The officer did not suffer any bodily injury as a result of the assault.
