Newton - Children may plan on spending summer vacation without any plans. Parents have different ideas and if one of those involves keeping the kids’ writing skills sharp, they can use one of two online writing seminars from Sussex County Community College. “Creative Writing Challenge” and “Writing Your Life n The Art of the Novella,” are designed to keep middle school or high school students engaged over the summer. Patricia Paugh, a Kittatinny Regional High School teacher and former award-wining journalist, joined forces with the college to teach creative writing classes to middle and high school students. Paugh is offering online courses through SCCC for students between the ages of 11 and 18, in two age groups. One class focuses on different types of creative writing; the second offers students the opportunity to write life stories. “I am so enthusiastic about teaching writing classes in a relaxed setting. There are not many local outlets for students who want to explore writing as an art form,” Paugh noted. Students will be able to read their lessons and interact with Paugh and their class mates online securely. Paugh was a reporter for The Star-Ledger for 18 years and won several awards for her writing. For the past four years, she has taught English at Kittatinny Regional High School in Hampton Township. “It has always been my dream to help students reach their writing potential,” Paugh said. Each six week course costs $75 and starts the first week of July. For more information visit www.sussex.edu/cce or call 973-300-2143.
