Oroho takes hotly contested nomination in primary
Newton After a barrage of radio ads with candidates attacking each other and numerous letters to the editor in the same vein, the 24th District State Senate Republican primary is over. Sussex County Freeholder Steven V. Oroho pulled off a victory over Assemblyman Guy R. Gregg. Oroho took 8,134 votes to Gregg’s 5,991. He will face Edwin Selby in the fall. He will share the ballot in November with Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose, whose father’s Senate seat he is seeking, and fellow Freeholder Gary R. Chiusano. McHose took 9,563 votes and Chiusano 7,673 votes. Their opponents, Freeholder Director Susan Zellman and Eric A. Wood, netted 5,682 and 3,932 votes, respectively. Gregg had to vacate his Assembly seat to run for the State Senate. Zellman, however, remains on the freeholder board. On the Democratic side, Toni Zimmer and Pat Walsh ran unopposed for the nominations for the General Assembly seats. Incumbent Sheriff Robert E. Untig pulled off a primary victory over challenger Michael Strada, 6,436 votes to 6,288. The other challenger, Jack O. Stoll received 1,502 votes. Untig will face Democrat Wayne Yam in the fall. County Clerk Erma Gormley was unopposed in the primary and is unopposed in the general election. In the Republican primary for Freeholder, Harold J. Wirths and Jeffrey Parrot took 11,145 and 10,143 votes, respectively, to hold off a challenge from Albert Huizing who received 3,621 votes. No Democrats are on the ballot. No local races were contested. In Andover Borough, John A. Morgan received 50 votes for the Republican nomination for mayor. There were no Republican petitions filed for council. No Democrat filed for mayor. The two Democrats who filed for council, Peter Pearson and Douglas Mooney, received 18 and 17 votes, respectively. In Andover Township, Mayor Thomas D. Walsh Jr. received 534 votes in an unopposed primary. Incumbent Committeeman Robert O. Smith also received 534 votes. No Democratic petitions were filed. In Fredon, Carl F. Lazzaro received 331 votes in an unopposed Republican primary for township committee. No Democrats filed. In Green Township, Laszlo Raffay Jr. received 241 votes and Clifford Morgan 239 votes. They were unopposed for the Republican nomination for two committee seats. No Democrats filed. In Hampton Township, Michael Biron received 561 votes in the Republican primary for township committee. Joseph Maikisch received 67 on the Democratic side. In Stanhope, Mayor Diana M. Kuncken received 183 votes in her unopposed Republican primary. She will face former Democratic Councilman Brian S. Murphy in the fall. For council, incumbent Michael Vance received two fewer votes than newcomer Rosemarie Maio. He took 187 and she 189. They will run against Democrats John E. Mohrle and John Sherman, who received 55 and 51 votes, respectively. In Stillwater Township, no Democrats were on the ballot. Republicans Beth Raff and Jay Burd received 390 and 362 votes and will run unopposed in November.
