Pedestrian struck and injured in Newton
Newton - A pedestrian was slightly injured in a hit-and-run accident at 10:56 p.m. on Jan. 20 on Ryerson Avenue near its intersection wit Fairview Avenue. Newton Police responded to a report a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle. They obtained a description of the suspect vehicle description and were able to located it and stopped the vehicle which was traveling on West End Avenue in Newton. Investigation revealed that the vehicle, a 1998 Chevrolet Pickup, was operated by a 17-year-old male Newton resident at the time it struck the pedestrian, a 15-year-old male, also of Newton. Due to the age of both the defendant and victim, their names are not being released. Through the investigation it was learned that the defendant drove the vehicle recklessly in a northerly direction on Ryerson Avenue, swerved toward and struck the pedestrian who was walking southbound on the northbound side of the road with two other male juveniles. The pickup truck’s passenger side mirror struck the victim in the shoulder causing the glass in the side view mirror to shatter and causing injury to the victim. The defendant continued driving and left the scene after striking the pedestrian. The victim was treated and released from Newton Hospital for an injury to his shoulder. The defendant was arrested and charged on a juvenile delinquency complaint for assault by auto. He was also issued motor vehicle summonses for the provisional driver’s license passenger limitation, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident. The defendant was released and the matter is pending disposition in Family Court.
