Police arrest alleged Peeping Tom
Sparta - Police are looking into an incident involving a Sparta man, who was apprehended while allegedly videotaping females in various stages of undress near the Sparta Lake section of the township last week. Timothy Mahler, 44, of Lancer Street, in Sparta, was charged with fourth-degree peering, a misdemeanor, and released. Police said the investigation is ongoing. Sergeant Russell Smith said Mahler was arrested at 9 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, after allegedly videotaping females -- both adults and minors - in their homes. “This can happen anywhere,” said Smith. “But this could have gone on for a year if no one reported it.” Tom Saulys, a resident of nearby Fox Trail Road, said local residents are concerned. According to Saulys, Mahler has allegedly been seen looking into the windows of homes where teenage girls live or found hiding in the bushes at night. “Everyone knows him,” said Saulys. “It’s like stay away from this guy who walks by with the white dog. No one’s ever spoken to him.” Saulys said several local residents were contacted by police regarding the ongoing investigation. “The largest concern for all parents is what’s the next step,” said Saulys, who has two preschool children. Sergeant Smith said Mahler, who lives with his mother, has no previous convictions. “Everyone should be mindful of what they are doing at night; draw your shades,” said Smith. “If you see someone walking around, report it to us. People have a false sense of security when they’re at home.” Mahler was scheduled to appear in municipal court this week.
