NEWTON — The Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross is forming its 2006-2007 Youth Council, which will be open to students from sixth to 12th grade, throughout Sussex County. An orientation meeting for those interested is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 29, from 4 to 6 p.m. at chapter headquarters, 93 Spring St. in Newton. The Youth Council will be involved in programs ranging from the national American Red Cross Measles Initiative, Red Cross services to American military personnel around the world, and local community service programs, including blood drives. Students should be interested in community service and helping others, as well as becoming acquainted with the lines of service offered by the American Red Cross. The chapter’s Youth Council will be trained in basic disaster classes and will be taught to teach basic first aid. They will also be involved in other programs aimed at younger children. “This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved with our community in various ways through becoming an American Red Cross volunteer with the Sussex County Chapter. The experience will certainly foster maturity, knowledge, and leadership skills, and those who participate will gain the satisfaction which comes from helping those in need. Many of our Youth Council volunteers so enjoy the stimulation and rewards of volunteering, they catch Red Cross fever and wind up spending a lifetime as a volunteer for the American Red Cross,” comments Sherry Clain, Red Cross volunteer who chairs and administers the chapter’s Youth Council.
