SPARTA-The Frank Redfern Memorial Open, sponsored by the Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation, raised more than $62,000; the most successful outing to date for the foundation. The outing was held at the Lake Mohawk Golf Club in Sparta. "With all the work that is put into the golf outing by the volunteers and staff of the foundation, it is gratifying that this event is so successful," declared Dick Roberto and Mark Avondoglio of Perona Farms, co-chairs of the outing. "The foundation, the fund-raising arm of the hospital, is honored to be able to give back to the community that consistently continues to give to its hospital." The "Grand Event" sponsors for the outing are Reed Smith, LLP, and Turner Construction Company. Proceeds will go towards the hospital's expansion project, which includes the new Charles L. Tice Heart Center for diagnostic services. For golfers, the outing offered a day of fun and great prizes. As in the past, there were five hole-in-one sponsors. Bell BMW donated two cars as hole-in-one prizes on two par threes, in addition to sponsoring the dinner. The other three sponsors were Barn Hill Care Center, for a cash prize of $15,000; Danforth's Boat and Trailer, Inc., which donated a motorboat, and North Jersey Cycle, which offered a custom-built motorcycle. Other awards and substantial gift certificates from the pro shop at Lake Mohawk Golf Club, were presented to the players with low gross, low net, longest drive and closet to the pin. There will be a raffle for a one-week vacation at a two-bedroom condo in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Roberto and Avondoglio gave special thanks to The Lake Mohawk Golf Club board of trustees for their support and donation of the green fees, valued at $9,000, to the foundation.
