Sussex County — Writing and magnets and plays, oh my! Gifted and talented middle school students have more to choose from as Sussex County Community College begins the second year of The Academy for the Gifted and Talented. By offering a variety of higher-level courses, the academy's goal is to widen the knowledge and performance of high-achieving students. Beginning the week of Sept. 23, several courses will be offered for students in grades 4-6, under the guidance of the Child Study Institute at Kean University. Returning favorites include: elements of fiction writing, radio workshop, amusement park science, problem solving, and discovering electromagnetism. New classes planned are smoke and mirrors, science and technology in American society, and playwriting. The cost for each course is $120. A student must have scored at or above the 95 percentile in a recent nationally-recognized standardized test, or present a very selective recommendation letter from his or her class teacher, to be eligible for courses. Students can register online, but proof of eligibility must be received for processing. For more information on the academy and its courses, call 973-300-2287 or visit sussex.edu/cce.
