newton - The Foundation at Sussex County Community College will award 50 scholarships during their December ceremony. Students at SCCC are encouraged to apply for any of the available scholarships, ranging in dollar amount from $250 to $1,250, to be used for the coming spring semester. At the most recent scholarship ceremony in May, more than 40 scholarships, amounting to over $42,000, were awarded to 88 students for the 2005 fall semester. To apply for a scholarship, students must complete an application and submit a personal essay. Students are also required to provide a letter of recommendation in support of their candidacy. Completed scholarship applications should be returned to the Counseling Center by Oct. 18. "I am continually amazed at the number of new scholarships donated by area residents," said Linda Nieman, executive director of advancement and planning at SCCC. "In particular I've been impressed with the number of new endowments that have been established. The endowment funds need a minimum of $10,000 to get started and the scholarships disbursed are from the interest only, so this type of scholarship lives on forever." December ceremony attendees will notice some newcomers to SCCC's impressive list of scholarships. The Sowinski Sullivan Future Architects Scholarship and the Franklin Mutual Insurance Scholarship will both be awarded for the first time. For information, students may visit the counseling center; or call 973-300-2207 any Tuesday or Wednesday; or visit the SCCC web site at sussex.edu/studentlife/counseling/scholarships.htm.
