Senior foundation conducts silent auction fundraiser at Farmstead

Lafayette The Senior Quality of Life Foundation, an organization that offers a number of services to enhance the life of county seniors, conducted its annual fundraiser, a “Silent Auction,” at the Farmstead Golf Course Country Club in Lafayette on Sunday, Oct. 1. A number of county dignitaries, including Freeholders Susan Zellman and Glen Vetrano, who is also a Board member of the organization, joined some 40 guests and other Board members for the auction and a luncheon. Guests were entertained by an area musician, as they eagerly placed bids on donated antiques, memorabilia and household items provided by Board members, distinguished guests and corporate sponsors, such as Clear Channel and Grinnell Paving. Area attorney and foundation president Elenora L. Benz made several presentations prior to the auction to honor Board members, including past president David Mortimer for his actions, “in stepping up to keep the Board focused in a period of change.” An emotional toast was given to former Director of Sussex County Division of Social Services Mary Lou McCutcheon, a Trustee Emeritus of the foundation who is now retiring from those posts, but will continue to maintain her presence in activities to promote a qualify life and lifestyle for county seniors. Monies raised from this fundraiser will be used to purchase equipment and services for seniors, which in the past included the purchase of a number of computers for senior nutrition centers that facilitated senior learning and Internet usage. This year’s funds will also be earmarked for an initiative to aid area homebound seniors. Benz announced at the event that a Neighbor-to-Neighbor program will be launched in the coming year, to match seniors in need with other seniors that can offer companionship and other supportive services to serve and enrich the lives of participating seniors. The fundraiser and the proposed activities are in keeping with the mission of the Senior Quality of Life Foundation: To provide programs and activities for Sussex County seniors not available from Government sources. And, to educate seniors, their families and the community about resources available in the county, which will enhance the quality of life of area seniors, now and in the future.
