September is sign-up month for Scouts

Sussex County — The benefits of scouting range from teaching children to be self-reliant, dependable and caring, to learning traditional values such as honesty, trustworthiness and respect for others and the environment. The 2005/2006 scouting year kicks off in September, for boys and girls from first grade through 20 years of age. The program stresses honesty, bravery and respect, values that help children build confidence and make constructive decisions throughout their lifetimes, accomplishing worthy goals while serving the community and strengthening relationships within the family. There are three programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America, including a co-ed program for teenagers. The Cub Scout program, for boys in first through fifth grades, offers educational activities and stresses values that strengthen character, develop good citizenship, enhance mental and physical fitness, and provide boys with positive peer groups. The Boy Scout program is for boys who have earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light Award, have completed the fifth grade, or are between 11 and 17 years of age. The objectives are development of character, citizenship and personal fitness qualities. The co-ed Venturing program, open to teens from 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age, helps young people mature and become more responsible and caring adults. Based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth, adult leaders and community organizations, the program offers exciting and meaningful activities that help teens pursue their special interests while developing their leadership and citizenship skills.
