Newton - Kim Beacon and Pete Koopman, owners of the newly opened Spring Street Soup Company in Newton, are receiving a warm welcome from patrons to match the comforting warmth of the home-made chicken chili, clam chowder, cream of broccoli, and other favorites they have been serving up since opening for business. For dessert, their new café offers the famous Cliff’s ice cream of Roxbury. “Kim is from Frankford and always wanted to be part of Newton’s blossoming,” said Koopman. “We both love ice cream and we both love soup, so we figured this would be a great way to be part of the growth of the community.” The couple completely renovated a long-vacant store front and opened last November. The store offers a wide variety of soup flavors, from the traditional, such as beef stew and lentil soup, to the unique. “They are high-quality soups and we do tweak them here,” said Brian Smith, who manages the store. On any given day there are choices of five soups as well as chicken or beef chili, rolls and bagels, along with hot and cold drinks. Cliff’s ice cream is available in cups or cones. “You couldn’t ask for a better choice in ice cream, and it’s very high quality for a decent price,” said Smith. “We want to offer a good quality product for a little less than the competitors.” Reaction from the community has been “very positive,” said Smith. “Everyone has something nice to say. They feel comfortable and it is quaint like a New York City café.” Among those who have enjoyed a recent visit to the café are Ellen Leach and Joan Cobucci of Newton, who came at the recommendation of one of Leach’s friends. “She was raving about the store’s soups and selections,” said Leach. In their first visit, the two women tried the cream of broccoli soup and labeled it “excellent.” “Joan and I want to come back and try all the soups,” said Leach. The two also had high praise for the service, which Cobucci described as “good, old-fashioned cordial, that is a rarity nowadays.” The Spring Street Soup Company is located at 207 Spring St.. The café is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. To find out what’s cooking or see a menu, log on to springstreetsoup.com.
