12U Lenape Blazers win Kittatinny fastpitch tourney

Byram - The 12 & Under Lenape Blazers Girls Softball team outscored their opponents, 59-7, with six victories in the 2006 Kittatinny Tournament on May 20-21. The Blazers’ offense was led by Kristen Millian (eight for 18, 10 runs scored, 12 RBI), Danielle Levine (eight for 12, seven runs, 12 RBI) and Caitlin Zaleski (seven for 12, nine runs, nine RBI). In game one, Caitlin Zaleski (11 strikeouts, two walks) no-hit the High Point Heat, 10-0. Alyx DiRenzo singled to left and scored and Jordan Benvenuto knocked in one and scored another. In two, Deanna Inez striuck out eight, walked two, and allowed only two hits in defeating Newton Maroon, 5-2. Kristen Millian drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double to secure the win. The Blazers beat Newton White in game three, 19-0, as Caitlin Zaleski (10 strikeouts, two walks) got the win. Meagan Price reached base three times and scored two runs. Jenna Tambasco’s second-inning double capped off a nine-run inning. In the elimination round, Deanna Inez allowed one hit in defeating Sparta, 10-0. Brianna Gowe reached base twice and scored both times. In the semi-final game, the Blazers defeated Kittatiny, 11-2, behind the hitting of Suzanne Grochowski and Jenna Tambasco. In the final game, Lenape defeated Mt. Olive, 4-3. With no score in the third inning, Zaleski and Millian both doubled to center to score the first run. Levine singled to left to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead. Mt. Olive retaliated in the bottom of the third with three runs on two hits. The Blazers tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth when Tambasco drove in Grochowski. The Blazers took the lead in the fifth when Levine singled to center, scoring Deanna Utter from second. Kathleen Schmitt caught a long fly ball to left, and Utter threw out the tying run attempting to steal third in the bottom of the sixth to end the game and secure the championship for Lenape. The victory marked the 11th in a row for Lenape (14-2).
