SCIL Cross Country Festival Pope John’s Jeremy Scheid broke his older brother’s meet record by two seconds in winning the boys’ division of the 2006 SCIL Cross-Country Festival contested at the Sussex County Fairgrounds on Saturday. With the Lions putting five runners among the top seven finishers, it was no contest for the team title as Pope John posted 18 points to 101 by runner-up Vernon. In the varsity girls’ division, Pope John’s Lara Heigis was the SCIL champion, breaking the 18-minute barrier for the first time in her career with a time of 17:55.32. Pope John claimed the girls’ team title while High Point edged Wallkill Valley by a single point for second place. Stacey Lepes was the first Wildcat to finish, placing fifth in 19:03.92. Matt Pezzulo of Pope John won the junior varsity boys’ race in 17:12 while High Point’s Amanda Porrispita placed first in the girls’ JV competition with a clocking of 22:25. Pope John’s Andrew Hanifin finished first in the freshmen mixed 2600-meter run, posting a time of 10:49.01 while his classmate Marissa Galante was the first frosh girl to finish, placing 14th in 12:52.
