Gridiron action West Milford falls to Millburn, 18-15 The West Milford Highlanders dream for an undefeated season were lost in a 18-15 defeat to coach Carmen Guarino’s visiting Millburn Millers. Millburn wasted little time taking a 6-0 lead, when Dan Silver roped in a 40-yard pass from Ben D’Alessio. The Highlanders caught a break when the extra point kick failed. Millburn rode their 6-0 lead into the second quarter until West Milford’s Mike Van Hooker broke free for a 40-yard dash into the end zone. Highlander Paul Fogg nailed the extra point to give the home team the lead. The Millers battled back before halftime, however, as James Freeman capped a drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. The extra point failed again, but Millburn’s D’Alessio led his team back to the promised land with another 15-yard strike to Silver. Both teams defenses spotted goose eggs in the third, but West Milford made the most of a fourth quarter drive when Ben Mizerek launched a 65-yard bomb to Matt Gasparian. Mizerek connected with Van Hooker for the two-point conversion, but Millburn held on for the win. Boys’ soccer Lakeland 4, West Milford 2 Jason Berlinger and Kyle Gilroy found the back of the net for the Highlanders, but Mateusz Korotko, Keith Bisbe and Dan Kusnic scored for Lakeland. Nick Resavy wracked up 10 saves on the afternoon. Girls’ soccer West Milford 2, Mt. Saint Dominic 1 Monika Kapitula ripped one past West Milford’s Kait Bailey, but the Highlanders countered with offensive force Brittany Mongelli who scored both the equalizer and the game winner. Bailey had 12 saves on the day. Field hockey West Milford 1, Butler High School 0 The Highlanders dominated possession in a game that featured a lot of sturdy defense. Butler’s Mandi Konopinski turned away 13 shots, but West Milford’s Colleen Maguire found teammate Brittany Earl who put in the games on
