SPARTA — Two-time NBA World Champion with the Houston Rockets and career assist leader at the University of North Carolina, Kenny Smith, will host a basketball camp in Sparta at the House of Sports, 14 Park Lane Road, from June 26 to June 30.
After nine seasons in the NBA, Smith went on to carve out a successful career as a studio analyst on the Emmy Award-winning Inside the NBA with Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neill, and Ernie Johnson, and during the NCAA Tournament.
Kenny has run a successful youth basketball camp in Chapel Hill, North Carolina for over 20 years. He is very involved at the camp, conducting all instruction and demonstrations. The camp offers basketball stations, games, and contests and allows campers to interact with professional athletes, community leaders and top AAU players, as well as college and high school coaches.
Smith's nephew, His nephew, Joseph Dawkins, is a coach at The House of Sports, and Pope John Middle School in Sparta and Sussex County Community College. Dawkins thought that Kenny’s approach would be well received in New Jersey. Joe has been a coach and camper at Kenny’s Carolina Camp for years and wanted to bring a similar experience to players in the Northeast.
“Kenny hosts one of the best basketball camps in the country," Dawkins said. "He truly cares about the kids and personally works with them. He has a wealth of basketball knowledge and experience. I can’t wait for my players to get that type of camp experience.”
This year, Kenny and Joe will be running a camp for boys and girls ages 8-18 in Sparta at The House of Sports.
“We are excited to bring our basketball and teaching philosophy to New Jersey," Smith said. "Whether we are focusing on fundamental skills or challenging more experienced players with advanced techniques, we are always reinforcing teamwork and building confidence. Working with kids is one of my favorite things to do.”
Coach Joe, a Jr. NBA certified coach, is looking forward to drawing on the Jr. NBA skills and drills curriculum. They will set up a Jr. NBA Skills Challenge Course and the boys and girls winners will be posted on a variety of social media channels including the Jr. NBA and Kenny “The Jet” Smith’s accounts, reaching millions of NBA fans.
Max Bonnstetter, Sparta resident and Sports Illustrated Kids and Jr. NBA reporter, will be at the camp representing the Jr. NBA.
