Nutley beats KRHS girls in softball opener

— Nutley High School (Essex County, N.J.) defeated Kittatinny Regional High School in girls varsity softball on Monday, April 3. The final score was 6-1. The season opener took place at Kittatinny Regional High School in Hampton Township. The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning. Samantha Borkstrom scored for Kittatinny in the fifth. After being down 1-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning the Nutley Maroon Raiders' bats got cracking. Emily Hewett got things going with an RBI double to score Cecelia Mielnicki to put Nutley on the scoreboard. Nutley batters followed up by scoring five more runs. Courtney Wilde pitched seven innings for Nutley, throwing a three-hitter, giving up only one unearned run and four walks while striking out four. Alexis Cooke took the lose for the Kittatinny Cougars. Cooke pitched for seven innings striking out 12 batters.
