SCIL Track Festival

Vernon’s Justin Gannon and Hopatcong’s Joe Martinek captured three gold medals apiece in the 2006 SCIL Track and Field Championships contested on the campus of Lenape Valley in Stanhope last week. Gannon sprinted to first place finishes in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes while Martinek won the high jump, long jump and javelin competitions. Vernon’s Elise Fugowski set the only record of the meet division when she broke the tape in 57.03 seconds to win the 400-meter dash and eclipse the old standard of 57.56 set by Newton’s Shekia Jackson in 2003. Pope John swept the team titles as the squads prepped for the upcoming “Road to the Gold” that ends at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions scheduled for Wednesday, June 7 at South Plainfield.
