Vernon’s Justin Gannon and Hopatcong’s Joe Martinek starred at the 2006 NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1 Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday. The Viking senior sprinted to gold medal finishes in the Group IV 100-meter (10.9) and 200-meter (21.9) dashes while picking up the silver medal in the 400-meter (50.1) competition. Martinek, the Chief’s stellar junior, won the Group II javelin (190-0) in which he is the defending state champion, as well as the high jump (6-4) while finishing in the runner-up slots in the long jump (21-11) and triple jump (44-6). Wallkill Valley’s John Ramos edged Martinek by one inch for the gold in the triple jump with a total distance of 44-7. High Point’s Laura Champignon uncorked a toss of 129-1 to win the Section 1, Group II girls’ javelin. Her teammate Shannon McEvoy earned four berths in the Group II championships when she glided to a bronze medal finish in the 400-meter low hurdles, placed fourth in the triple jump, was sixth in the 100-meter high hurdles and ran a leg on the Wildcats’ fourth place 1600-meter relay quartet. The Road to the Gold continues as the top six finishers in each event in the four groups of the four sectional meets qualified for the NJSIAA Group championships on Friday and Saturday with the I, II and IV championships set for Egg Harbor Township. The Group III as well as the Non-Public A and B meets will be contested at South Plainfield which will host the NJSIAA Meet of Champions on Wednesday, June 7.
