Netcong - Students at St. Michael School in Netcong look forward to the yearly celebration of Catholic Schools Week, and not just because they are allowed to wear jeans to class. “This is a week of community-building, spirit, and pride,” said Marianne Voloninno, school principal. “The children, along with the school community, carry that spirit, enthusiasm, creativity, and joy in their school with them much longer than the week.” All activities of the week stress the importance of this year’s theme, “character, compassion and values,” within the context of teamwork and having fun. The nationwide celebration asserts that the schools do not simply provide an education, but rather offer an education infused with the three principles. The service projects included the well-being of others such as the “Manna Drive,” a food collection conducted and distributed by the students. “CAP Day” (care about people day) encouraged the children wear a hat symbolizing their future career choices, and a donation for the privilege of wearing the hat was then sent to local charities. There were spelling and geography bees, a forensic contest, a talent show, and patriots’ day to wear the colors of the flag. Sixth and seventh graders became “big sisters” and “big brothers.” taking kindergarten students under their wing. Finally, after a mass to conclude the week, a school spirit competition was held with songs and cheers written and choreographed by the children.
