Byram - In seventh grade Biology, the students started the school year off with a review on measurement using Standard International Units to measure length, mass, and volume of materials. They used their critical thinking skills to solve problems employing the scientific method, and then onto constructing plant and animal cells. Presently, they are studying the cellular movement of reactants and products through selectively permeable membranes. Plants were the focus of their experiments on osmosis and diffusion. Their discussions have taken the topic outside of the classroom, and into every day occurrences such as causes of wind and waves, wilting vegetables, and aerobic respiration in our own bodies. Next, they will study how cells divide, which can help heal our bodies, as well as research the causes of cancer. Later in the school year when studying animals, they will be dissecting the earthworm as part of the program. The Plant and Ecology Units will follow in the spring. The good weather will provide them time to grow a variety of plants indoors and outdoors. Students will be creating a particular biome of their choice during their Ecology study. Science classes are in a cycle of perpetual motion with all of their activities.
