Stanhope - Over the last two months, students and teachers at Valley Road School have been working on a quilt project, Sending Hope from Stanhope. The project began in September, when teachers and students expressed interest in helping victims of Hurricane Katrina. Students, parents, and staff were asked to donate money to purchase a square on the quilts. They were able to pick a block, sign a message and help design each quilt. The quilt project was meant to provide money and comfort to children affected by the hurricane. Around $600 has been raised so far. The “official” Sending Hope from Stanhope square, sewn on every quilt, was designed and made by art teacher Sara O’Neill. Ginny Kopperl, fourth- and fifth-grade math teacher, organized the sewing, washing and patching of quilts with assistance from other staff members. An assembly was held the day before the quilts were sent to Saylers Elementary School in order to name the quilts. Eighth graders held up the quilts for the rest of the students to see before and during the assembly. The names were chosen by teachers from students’ suggestions. “Soccer Pallooza”, “Racing to the Rescue” and “Red, White and Blue for Faith” were among the names chosen.
