Stanhope - After two years of “talking it over,” Stanhope seniors have finally pulled together to form their own social club. President Nancy Hoyt said that some individuals had been discussing the possibility of forming the group and took action at the beginning of the year. Appearing at the March 28 council meeting, Hoyt announced the launching of the club, and at the same time, requested funding from the council. Known officially as the Stanhope Borough Senior Citizens, the new group will meet at the First Presbyterian Church on Main Street at noon on the fourth Thursday of the month. The first meeting drew 42 of the 70 people who initially signed up. As with any new venture, there is much to be decided regarding meeting format, and activities are still in the planning and suggestion stage. Some meetings will feature a guest speaker. The first get-together featured a talk by schools superintendent Nick Brown, who explained the details of the increase in the school budget for the coming year. The primary purpose of the club is to provide activities for Stanhope’s seniors, and committees will be organized to suggest and plan trips. Vice president Joanne Agens said the excursions are in the early planning stages, but the initial trips will likely be close to home. The first outing is scheduled for April 28 and includes dinner at Joseph’s Restaurant, followed by Sleeping Beauty at the Growing Stage. Hoyt said the group is inviting all seniors from the borough to become an active part of the club. The group will also welcome a limited number of persons from neighboring districts. Both Hoyt and Agens said they are pleased with the initial response. Within a month’s time, we had almost 70 names,” said Agens. “It’s obvious that there was a need for such a group, and I think it’s a good thing.” Rounding out the roster of officers are treasurer Margaret Findley and secretary Sue Bogen.
