State launches Smart Workplaces program
New Jersey The New Jersey Department of Transportation has announced the launch of the NJ Smart Workplaces program to honor employers in New Jersey that have created significant and innovative alternative commute programs for their employees. Companies who meet the criteria receive recognition and earn the right to place the NJ Smart Workplace logo on their company communications. The application process has been kept to a minimum to encourage N.J. employers who offer commuter benefits to apply and receive the recognition. The application can be obtained by calling TransOptions, the northwest N.J. Transportation Management Association, at 267-7600. It requires a company representative to simply check off the activities and practices available at their company from a list provided in the application. “This is a great opportunity for companies in our area to gain recognition for their ongoing efforts to improve commuting,” commented John F. Ciaffone, President of TransOptions. He continued, “Many northwest NJ employers are offering their employees incentives and services to encourage practices that reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. I am delighted to see that they will now be able to receive recognition from the state for their efforts. This is an exciting opportunity for companies that already offer incentives and for other companies to find out about what they need to offer if they want to be a Smart Workplaces Employer.” The application presents a list of 22 different activities and practices that are considered commuter friendly. Depending upon the number of benefits offered the company can receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold level designation. The checklist includes such activities as hosting commuter events, placing alternative commute information in new-hire packets, providing a transit subsidy to employees, offering a flextime and/or telework program and providing on-site amenities such as food service, dry cleaners, ATM/bank and services. Full details on this new program can be obtained by calling TransOptions at 267-7600.
