Newton - Kittatinny students designed and sculpted ceramic bowls for a fund-raising project to help feed the hungry in their community. According to art teacher Jessica Zalme, the idea for the project originated 10 years ago in Michigan, where for a small donation, students served soup and bread to guests who took the bowl home as a reminder of hunger in the world. Since then, “Empty Bowls” events have been held throughout the world and millions of dollars have been raised to combat hunger. Students in Zalme’s classes began their project by learning how to make clay coils and a pinching technique to create bowls. They had the creative freedom to design any type of bowl. The bowls were dried and placed in the kiln to be fired, glazed, and fired again. They were then sold at a school craft fair that raised more $250, which was donated to the Manna House in Newton.
