Newton - Beginning March 1, Sussex County Community College will offer literacy courses for workers employed in small businesses, thanks to a partnership with the N.J. Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development. “Specifically, the courses at Sussex County Community College will help train employees of small- and medium-sized transportation and distribution, health care, hospitality, landscaping, custodial and building services, food service, and maintenance and repair companies here in Sussex County,” said Sivaraman Anbarasan, dean of corporate and community education at the college. Courses to be offered include English as second language, basic skills in mathematics and communication, work readiness, and PC skills such as Windows, Internet, Microsoft Office and e-mail. “These courses will provide critical skill sets necessary to improve workers’ on-the-job performance and open up opportunities for them to advance on the job,” said Dr. Brad Gottfried, college president. “In addition, the courses will help participants gain the literacy skills they need to enroll in any of the technical skill classes available at Sussex County Community College.” Participants must be workers employed 30 hours or more per week by a business in Sussex County. The training is free to workers and employers. If there are enough employees in one company, the course may be conducted on-site.
