Sussex County YMCA sponsors charity bike drive

Hamburg The Sussex County YMCA will once again sponsor and host the used bike collection for “Pedals for Progress.” Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in good or repairable condition is urged to donate their bike from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7. Pedals for Progress is a non-profit organization that collects over 11,000 bicycles annually and transfers this material wealth to those who need it the most. Brochures explaining this innovative program will be available at the collection site. “This program is a real win win’ situation for everyone. It allows people to discard old and used bicycles in an environmentally friendly way and at the same time it provides low cost transportation for people who really need it,” said Joanne Brown, Senior Program Director at the YMCA. With the cost to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle at $28, donations to defray these expenses are welcomed. The YMCA and Pedals for Progress will also be accepting working sewing machines and tools, especially wrenches for the overseas shops. All cash and material donations are fully tax deductible and a receipt will be available at the collection site.
