Sparta - Sussex County Technical School hosted its second annual SkillsUSA “Countdown to Competition” pasta and chicken dinner on Tuesday, March 28. Through the continued support of the board of education and various fundraisers and donations, 91 students will participate in state competitions on May 12 and May 13 in Somerset. Approximately 275 attendees (consisting of competitors, parents, siblings and grandparents) enjoyed a meal prepared by Chef Scully. SkillsUSA advisors, Ralph Starace, Debbie Wakefoose and Laura Galantino, presented Joseph Cammarata, superintendent, with a special award in recognition of his ongoing commitment to SkillsUSA. Joanne Vincenz, assistant director of SkillsUSA in New Jersey, said she is impressed with the leadership skills of state officers, Carmella Re (northern region president) and Jessy Witten (northern region secretary). Vincenz recognized the team effort of administrators, faculty and staff, who greeted, served and cleaned up at the dinner, and also thanked the faculty, administration and board of education for working together in support of SkillsUSA to ensure that America has a skilled workforce. Local SkillsUSA competitors hope to win several gold medals in Somerset to qualify for the national competitions in June in Kansas City.
