Sparta - The Spanish Cultural Club at Sussex County Technical School successfully completed its second mission to the Dominican Republic during the N.J. Teacher’s Convention in November. The missionaries were warmly greeted by teachers, who had posted photographs of the previous year’s mission on their classroom walls. The Sussex Tech students delivered school supplies, clothing, first-aid kits, toiletries, baseball bats and caps to students and teachers from eight schools and residents of the town of Puerto Plata area on the northern shore of the island nation. Many organizations, including churches, local clubs and schools donated the items. The trip was judged a resounding success thanks to the untiring effort of countless volunteers, including teachers, students, doctors, nurses and members of the community from all walks of life. A major purpose of the Spanish Cultural Club is to promote positive relationships with our Latin American neighbors. To this end, club members have collected the names and addresses of national and local Dominican government officials, teachers and business representatives to keep in touch with them and help forge better ties with the people of the Dominican Republic. Club members are already looking forward to next year’s mission to continue helping the children in the Dominican Republic who are in need of school supplies, clothing and personal hygiene items.
