Union generals will be topic of Civil War Round Table
Newton - The Henry Ryerson Round Table will host a presentation by Bill Styple, historian and author of numerous books about the Civil War, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, in the Sussex Bank Theatre at Sussex County Community College. Styple recently published, Generals in Bronze, a collection of interviews conducted by artist James E. Kelly (1855 - 1933) with more than 40 Union generals. He will provide insights into the lives and perspectives of some of the most important military leaders in the Civil War. During the decades that followed the war, James Kelly both sketched the generals for a series of bronze relief portraits, and took detailed notes of their conversations. In this way he contributed a unique picture of the lives of many of the great figures of the Civil War period. A graduate of Catawba College, Styple runs the Belle Grove Publishing Company and is the town historian in Kearny. He is also a Civil War re-enactor and has been with Co. E 15th N.J. Volunteer Infantry for over 15 years. Among his books are The Little Bugler, which was awarded the Young Readers Award from the N.Y. Civil War Round Table, What Death More Glorious, a biography of General Strong Vincent, and several books using Civil War veterans’ letters. He is currently writing a biography of General Philip Kearny. Admission to the meeting is free. Sussex County Community College is located at One College Hill Road in Newton. A shuttle bus is available to drive visitors from the upper parking lot to the theatre. For information, call 973-300-2122.
