VMC seeks candidates for Americorps VISTA
Newton - VMC, the volunteer center serving northwest New Jersey, is seeking candidates to manage programs as Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA). Developed in 1964 under President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Americorps VISTA program, known as the domestic Peace Corps, assists communities in developing their capacitiy to meet local needs. Since 1965, more than 100,000 VISTAs have joined forces with 12,000 public agencies and not-for-profit groups to help communities across the country by doing things like increasing housing opportunities, developing literacy programs, and improving health care in underserved communities. VISTA workers receive a bi-weekly subsistence allowance, as well as an education award or stipend at their completion of a full year of service. VISTA workers must be at least 18 years of age. VMC, a VISTA sponsor, has several opportunities immediately available for those interested in managing programs relating to youth engagement and mentoring, as well as helping seniors take advantage of internet technology. “Becoming a VISTA is a terrific opportunity for a recent college graduate or a retiree to develop and implement a program that will make a significant difference to those in need in our communities,” noted Carol McKinney, executive director of VMC. “It’s the type of work that MBA schools are looking for prior to accepting candidates into their programs - real hands-on achievements in a business environment. What a great chance to make a difference while exercising one’s creativity and management skills.” For more information about the VISTA program, contact VMC’s executive director at cmckinney@vmcnj.org or 973-538-7200 ext. 15.
