NEWTON—Volunteers are needed for “Strengthening Families,” a program of The Center for Prevention and Counseling. Strengthening Families Program is a 14-week educational program for the whole family that provides educational groups for parents, children ages 7-12, and adolescents ages 12-17. “The focus of Strengthening Families is enhancing communication skills between family members and helping the family to increase their ability to express their feelings and concerns to one another,” Kristy Lavin, coordinator of the program said. “Every family struggles from time to time with these issues. This is why the program is so practical for any family.” This program is open to any family in Sussex County. Groups are located throughout the county in Newton, Vernon, Montague, and Sussex. There is no cost to participating families. Pizza and drinks are provided and child-care is offered for children under 7 years old. Strengthening Families volunteers must attend a training session on Sept. 7 from 5 to 6 p.m. For more information or to register contact Kristy at The Center for Prevention and Counseling at 383-4787.
