West Brookwood accepting applications for annual scholarship competition
Byram - For the sixth year in a row, the West Brookwood Property Owners Association is sponsoring a Scholarship Competition for the area’s teen residents. The competition is open to all graduating seniors living in West Brookwood who will be attending college. The $500 award will be announced during awards night to be held at Lenape Valley Regional High School. In order to open the competition to more students, the organization is moving away from only considering a student’s GPA and giving more weight to the essay the applicants are require to submit. “We want to make it available to most of the kids,” said the association’s director, Elaine Carr, “and that’s the reason that emphasis is on the essay not scholastic standing.” According to Carr, the 200-word essay - with emphasis on keeping it to that length - which subject, “What I Like about Living in West Brookwood and How We Can Improve It,” is worth 50 points. A minimum GPA of 3.0 and participation in school and community activities are each valued at 25 points. Because the award is designated as a scholarship towards college tuition, the winner also must provide a letter of acceptance from the school they will be attending. Past winners of the scholarship are: Daniel V. Mintz, Alyssa Krake, Kira Fagerlin, Luke Boralsky, and Asley Baty.
