Stanhope - Dozens of local residents got an inside look at the Whistling Swan Inn on June 8 during an open house conducted in conjunction with the annual Stanhope Days celebration. “I have driven by here every day for years and always wanted to check it out,” said one visitor, whose comment was typical. Refreshments and door prizes added a festive note, along with special incentives for visitors who toured the nine-room Victorian home. Liz Armstrong, innkeeper and owner, said she was motivated to host the open house to show off her new “Walnut Valley Suite.” The suite is fitted with elegant furnishings and rich fabrics, and features an in-room Jacuzzi and fireplace. In addition to the new suite, the veranda, parlors, dining area, gift shop and eight more guest rooms were available to view. Plans are under way for a second suite opening in the fall. “We are a big part of this community and we want to encourage visitors to see the beautiful environment that our home offers, as well as the amenities available for visiting family or business guests,” said Armstrong. The house now known as the Whistling Swan Inn was built in 1905 by Justice of the Peace Daniel Best for his wife, Sarah. After passing through six families, it was restored to its turn-of-the century Victorian splendor and converted to a bed and breakfast in 1985. The Whistling Swan Inn is located at 110 Main St. in Stanhope. Armstrong invites local business owners or residents to call and schedule a personal tour at their convenience.
