Who will be ‘Best in Show' in Branchville?

Branchville - The Ramapo and Palisades Kennel clubs will host their 44th All-Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trial from Saturday, Oct. 15, through Monday, Oct. 17, at the Sussex Country Fair Grounds. Judging will begin promptly at 9 a.m. and continue until approximately 4 p.m. Admission is $2 for parking. The show is held indoors and outdoors, rain or shine, with extensive tenting provided. More that 1,800 dogs in approximately 147 breeds are expected to compete. Dog shows provide spectators with a unique opportunity to see and learn more about their favorite breeds. Canine athletes will compete in conformation and obedience events. In conformation events, dogs are compared against an ideal standard for the specific breed to determine the quality of the breeding stock. Many dogs compete to earn their conformation championship, while the elite dream of winning the coveted “Best in Show” award. In obedience events, the dogs are required to perform specific exercises showcasing their athletic ability and their willingness to work. Many teams are looking to finish the exercises with a qualifying score toward one of the three obedience titles, while the elite are vying for the coveted “High in Trial” award. The show committee will have a community service table staffed with club members to answer questions, distribute literature, and provide information on responsible dog ownership. Breeders and handlers will also be available to discuss their experiences in showing and training purebred dogs. Potential dog owners can meet the dogs and breeders and learn about selecting a puppy. In addition, numerous vendors will be available on the grounds offering a variety of products and services. The Ramapo Kennel Club is an all-breed, non-profit club affiliated with the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the New Jersey Dog Federation of Dog Clubs.
