Why do we fight?
Sparta Today our troops are engaged in Iraq and elsewhere. Why are we doing what we are doing? What is it doing to others? And what is it doing to us? The Northwest New Jersey Peace Fellowship will present a poignant film, “Why We Fight,” on Friday, Nov. 3 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Sparta United Methodist Church, 71 Sparta Avenue, Sparta. Inspired by Dwight D. Eisenhower’s legendary farewell speech - in which he coined the phrase “military industrial complex” - filmmaker Eugene Jarecki surveys a scorched landscape of a half-century adventures. In this unique film, Jarecki was asking how - and telling why - a nation of, by and for the people has become the savings-and-loan of a system whose survival depends on a constant state of war. This film moves beyond the headlines of various American military operations to the deeper questions of why America fights. The Northwest New Jersey Peace Fellowship, an affiliate of New Jersey Peace Action, is a grass-roots organization of concerned citizens, primarily residents of Sussex County, committed to a culture of peace, justice and nonviolence. We welcome discussion and interaction on complex topics. The fellowship is both nonpartisan and nonsectarian. Though it educates on candidate and party positions on issues that are important to the organization, it does not endorse any candidate or political party. While it may sponsor events at local religious institutions, the organization is not affiliated with, nor in exclusive support of, any religious denomination. The organizers hope that the public will attend this screening event to be informed, to explore, to ask questions and to engage in thinking about these critically important world events. All are invited and welcomed. For more information, visit www.nwnjpeace.org.
