Sussex County - The Sussex County YMCA, in conjunction with Usbourne Books, will offer an educational seminar for parents and caregivers on the importance of reading, and how to help get children reading. The seminar will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, at the Sussex County YMCA and will be open to the public. In addition, Usbourne Books will give away nearly $100 worth of free books. “Experts tell us that children need to hear a thousand stories read aloud before they begin to learn to read for themselves,” said Joanne Browne, program director of the YMCA. “If every parent read a minimum of three stories a day to their children, that would deliver 1,000 stories in one year alone.” Mindy Martin of Usbourne Books is coordinating the program with the YMCA. “We believe the future of our world depends on the education of our children, with literacy as the cornerstone of every child’s education,” said Martin.
