Young pianists awarded scholarships at annual recital

Lafayette - A piano recital sponsored by the North Jersey Piano Teachers Association took place on Saturday, March 24, at the Lafayette Federated Church. The recital is a tradition that has been going on for the past twenty years and helps to raise funds for scholarships to support studies in music for talented students. This year, 37 students of nine music teachers performed intermediate to advanced levels of music before a capacity audience which attentively listened and warmly applauded the performers. Two students were lucky recipients of the music scholarship: Chelsea Di Diego, student of Beverly Flormann who performed Claire De Lune by Debussy; and Jamie Compton, student of Ed Korczynski who performed Sonata Op. 2 No. l - 1st movement by Beethoven. Both winners have been accepted to colleges where they will continue their studies in music. Other students in the recital ranged from early elementary to high school seniors, one of the youngest being Madeleine Cuan, student of Dora Homann. She performed the complete rendition of Fur Elise by Beethoven. Teachers of the participating students were: Dora Homann, Deborah Cafferata and Beverly Flormann all of Sparta, Betty Lange of Vernon, Ed and Margaret Korczynski of the Sussex County Music Workshop of McAfee, Stacey Garbarino-Mercado of Hackettstown, Jane Berkowitz and Dori Martin of Wantage.
