A Chanukah message
Dear Friends, A sacred adage instructs us to “listen carefully to the story the Chanukah Lights tell.” Indeed, they tell of a time of darkness which offered little hope for a brighter future. Yet, the brave resolve of the Maccabees resulted in the extraordinary victory of a few brave men and women over their many oppressors. This miracle led to another, the kindling of the Menorah, when oil sufficient only for one day lasted for eight. The brave faith and conviction of the Maccabees transformed those most difficult times into days of remarkable inspiration and celebration. We must listen carefully to this profound lesson. Faithful and enduring perseverance will ultimately prevail over dark and challenging circumstances. Moreover, it takes brightness to truly shed darkness. Joyful attitudes, Torah study, the performance of a Mitzvah or an assuring word or smile are G-dly conduits of light, which enable us to conquer adversity. Just a little light can dispel much darkness and reveal a positive reality once inconceivable. This sort of purposeful vision has driven the Jewish people, miraculously, for thousands of years. Each of us must strive to shed darkness by spreading light, every day. In our midst, one should always find a spirit of warmth, patience and acceptance that is unconditional. With tolerance and dedication, we can successfully illuminate the lives of many; intellectually, emotionally, spiritually and materially. Together we can bring about a world that is remarkable and one that was always meant to be. Warmest wishes for a joyous and illuminating Chanukah Holiday. Sincerely, Rabbi Asher Herson Regional Director Chabad Center of Northwest New Jersey
