Answer to engineer

To the Editor: This letter is in response to comments made in the April 19 “White Lake Project” article by Sparta Township engineer Charles Ryan and Councilman Scott Seelagy, regarding erecting walls. Ryan stated he would rather a professional landscape company do the work, instead of Sparta Township employees. Councilman Seelagy wants to make sure that if you put it up, you will not have to break it down and have a professional put it back up. In response to the comments, Sparta Township employees have a long history of building secure walls and structures. For example, a 15-year- old wall on Hilltop and Stanhope roads has never fallen or needed repairs. We have also rebuilt the bridge that connects the Sparta Mini Park (playground) to the Ungerman complex. Estimates were received from “professionals” to install a new bridge, but it was found to be more cost effective to do the work in house. Management also took bids to put in sidewalks at the new town hall, only to find out it could be done in-house with great savings. Our point is that we do have the talent, ability and knowledge to do these projects. We also take great pride in any job, no matter how big or small. We feel we can accomplish any task, given the time, material and proper conditions. We have proven this, time and time again. We feel we should get more credit from people in management who think we cannot do these projects. We hope the taxpayers of Sparta appreciate our work and all we do for the Township. Any input from taxpayers or management would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Select Members of Local 2294 Sparta Township Employees
