Bear hunters ‘an embarrassment'

To the Editor: This should be the last word about the bear hunt. This week the “Colbert Report,” a nationally syndicated TV show, featured our brave bear hunters and the real reasons for the bear hunt. They interviewed four hunters, including the spokesperson for the “sportsman club.” Bottom line: they can “get off work” to kill the bears, and ”the only good bear is a dead bear.” How do they catch them? ”Bait them with donuts.” KABOOM! I am a life member of the NRA. I do not want to be associated with the likes of these sportsmen (cough). The right to bear arms (no pun intended) is a basic right. I reserve this right to protect and defend my family and property. Nowhere does it give me the right to indiscriminately kill animals for the sake of killing. The people who think this is fun are just one step closer to a Neanderthal than I am. The TV commentary, which showed the moronic level of the hunters interviewed, was an embarrassment to myself, New Jersey, and all sportsmen. Sussexs County’s slogan is “people and nature together.” Yeah, right. That’s only if nature doesn’t interfere with the people who move to the country expecting it to be Bergen County. HELLO! ANIMALS LIVE IN THE WOODS. IF WE KEEP BUILDING ON THEIR HABITAT THEY HAVE NOWHERE TO GO. So apparently the answer is to kill them. Not a good answer. We must try to figure a way to control the people population ...I mean the bear population, without killing the animals for “fun”. If the politicians and scientists start working on this issue now, we will have bears for our future generations. And the people who hunt for food will have lots of deer and other wildlife to feed their families. Hank Sharp Wantage
