Community's Dis-service

To the Editor: In the middle of October, there was a flyer in our mailbox. It was a hand printed request for food donations for the senior citizens of Franklin Boro, in conjunction with the Salvation Army. The request was from a younger person, obvious from the handwriting. My husband and I picked out a few items from the cupboard, and purchased a few small things such as soups, fruit cups, jello, etc. The pick-up date was Oct. 28. The flyer described the vehicles which would be picking up the items. We knew from the description who was involved. Well, Oct. 28 was a rainy day, so we put the items in a large trash bag to keep them dry. Unfortunately, I awoke late that morning, so I put the bag out around 11 a.m. About 5 p.m., the bag was still there, so we delivered it to the home of one of the children. Do you know what we were told? We were the only ones in our community who responded to the flyer. We could not believe that not one other person would take the time to help a child be involved in a community service. When I hear everyone complaining about kids being selfish and then see one make an effort, it really hurts to think people would not go out of their way to give that child the encouragement to do good. I mean, what would it take to put a can or two of soup on your front porch? We received a very nice thank you from the participants. It said we made their day. I only wish a few more people could know what that meant. Kathleen Nielsen Franklin
