Let's come to our senses and save our heritage

I read with apprehension about the increasing disappearance of Sparta’s heritage; first, the trees along Sparta Avenue and Main Street; second, the Central; third, the theatre. The developer for the new theatre was quoted as saying that the old building was beyond repair or upgrade to be profitable. Leaving the preservation of history in the hands of developers is like leaving the welfare of sheep in the care of the wolf. Lately, two of the photographs in the town calendar have disappeared to the developers and “improvements.” Our history/heritage may be old, outdated, less functional; but, it is our past, our heritage, inspiration to our parents and children. Basking Ridge has a 500+ year-old tree with historical recognition. Newton is reputed to have an historical society with broad powers for preservation. Nothing is destroyed without their approval. In the past, Sparta has recycled many of its remaining landmarks. Even the tree in front of Sussex Bank is preserved in the deed to the property. Our history can be preserved and recycled, not destroyed and replaced. Unfortunately, the present town administration doesn’t seem to have any regard for historical preservation. I can only hope that they come to their senses, as in the case of Basking Ridge and Newton, or are replaced before they can do any more damage to Sparta’s heritage. William Quinlan Sparta
