‘Mom follows the rules'

To the Editor: In response to last week’s letter to the editor by Sandra Pregno: First of all, the two children in question were never playing illegally in Byram’s Hobb Engler Little League. They are the grandchildren of the woman who runs the league and have every right to play there as every other child. The proper paperwork has always been submitted. This year the children wanted to play baseball with the kids they see in school every day. The reason Mrs. Pregno’s husband can’t coach in Byram anymore is because of a board decision. Unusual and aggressive behavior is usually a good reason why the board decides a man or woman cannot coach. Unfortunately, my mother has taken the most heat for no reason. In writing this letter I felt an obligation to protect the reputation of my mother, although I am sure I will not be the only person who writes a letter defending the woman who runs the Hobb Engler Little League. She is respected and has done nothing but follow the rules and ordinances of Byram since she moved here 25 years ago. As for the supposedly “missing paperwork” or the children’s eligibility, no one has ever questioned the validity because there had never been any reason to. It is filed legally, where it is supposed to be. Michael Grant Byram
