Remember the troops this holiday season
To the Editor: At this time of year, we all tend to look for ways to help others and spread the warmth of the holiday season. As a mother of a soldier in the U.S. Army, I would like to add remembering the troops to that list. Their main job is to support and protect us, and they come form all walks of life, political, cultural and racial backgrounds. I know, personally, how profoundly they look forward to contact from home. There are many easy ways to lend support, from simply sending cards and letters, to sending phone cards and “care” packages. Many young children enjoy becoming pen pals with a soldier/marine or group of soldiers/marines. Employees of businesses and church groups might consider “adopting” a troop or troops.” The joy you get from knowing how happy your letter or package has made someone is beyond words. You can purchase phone cards or holiday cards to send to the troops with an attached personal message at the Newton Post Office. Many websites also offer forums to support the troops, such as adoptatroop.org, soldiersangels.org and anysoldeer.com. These are but a few of the many fine organizations that lend support to troops and you will find many ways of demonstrating it, on a group or personal level. What better time of year to give back to those who “give their all” for us. Happy holidays to all. Connie Martinez Branchville
