Sussex career center starts food drive
To the Editor: The Sussex One Stop Career Center recently announced its yearly food drive for NORWESCAP, a community action program dedicated to eradicating hunger and poverty in the five county region of North Western New Jersey. In any event, a number of individuals and organizations heard the call for food, including the One Stop Staff in the Newton and Franklin Offices, but one organization, noted for efforts to help those in need, launched a local effort that greatly contributed and filled a number of bins in the Franklin One Stop. That organization, a Girl Scout Troop from Franklin, harnessed their spiritual and musical talents to garner food for the Franklin One Stop Food Drive. The Troop Leader Barbara (Dee) Edwards and Girl Scout Troup 195 of Franklin, a member of the Lenni-Lenape Council, came up with a terrific and innovative idea for community service: Christmas Caroling for food. With their angelic voices in hand; they visited homes, sang carols and filled bins at the One Stop Career Center with food for those in need. The One Stop Administrator and staff at the One Stop were indeed overwhelmed with the contribution of these young carolers. The staff saluted Barbara Edwards and her troop, as they indeed know the spirit of Christmas. Hunger, as statistics increasingly indicate, impacts children and seniors in our county and elsewhere. With almost one in five children in America increasingly facing hunger and poverty, these young Girl Scouts were caroling to feed some of their counterparts in this county. Upon receipt of this food and bins from the Girl Scouts, Bill Weightman, administrator for the One Stop noted “that these Girl Scouts are certainly an asset to their community way beyond their years.” The One Stops of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development congratulate these Girls Scouts and all others that have brought food, and heard the clarion call to aid their neighbors for they indeed have their priorities straight.
