The mayor and superintendent of Sparta should resign
To the Editor: Whether or not you believe that Karen Scott made death threats against Dr. Thomas Morton, one thing should be obvious to everyone in Sparta. Manny Goldberg and Thomas Morton should resign. 1) If the allegations are true, why weren’t they reported to the police when the threats were overheard in April of 2006? Didn’t Mr. Goldberg have a civic duty to report this to the police? 2) If Dr. Morton felt threatened, why was no action taken until, as reported in the Sparta Independent, November of 2006? By failing to act sooner, an alleged dangerous person was allowed to continue teaching the children of Sparta, and then to continue her career at another school. Doesn’t the superintendent of schools have a responsibility to protect our children? 3) In December of 2006 why did Manny Goldberg threaten to expose this alleged dangerous person only if she ran for public office? 4) If the charges were, in fact, filed in November of 2006, why was there no record of them when an attorney asked the police about it in January of 2007? 5) If the charges were made in November of 2006, why didn’t the Sparta police investigate them in November of 2006? Let’s be realistic, if there were charges, the alleged perpetrator would have been contacted by the police. 6) If the allegations are not true, both Mr. Goldberg and Dr. Morton should be charged with election tampering. 7) If the allegations are false, when Manny Goldberg, acting as the mayor of Sparta contacted Mrs. Scott’s employer about the threats only to inform him that it would be embarrassing for Pope John if she ran for office, he left the township open to civil litigation. Election tampering is serious and I sincerely hope all of the allegations surrounding this issue are thoroughly investigated. Greg Kelsey Sparta, NJ
